=== The Elephant in the Universe === ==== Our Hundred-Year Search for Dark Matter ==== ==== Govert Schilling 2022 Bvtn Lib 523.1126 SCH ==== ( To do: cosmology tutorial https://www.astro.ucla.edu/~wright/cosmo_01.htm ) A well written, mind changing book, decent reference material. I might purchase a used copy , even though local libraries have copies. Washington County libraries also have Deep Space (2014), Ripples in Spacetime (2017) and Constellations (2019), and Multnomah County has Galaxies (2019). History of the idea of dark matter. The 900 pound gorilla in the room (so far) is that there is a lot more invisible gravitational mass at the galactic scale than does not interact electromagnetically. ----- Breaking News This book almost had me convinced, until I read the 13 Dec 2023 issue of Science magazine, with a short article about black holes in giant stars, pointing at a quite-readable article in The Astrophysical Journal, 2023 December 13. Solar Evolution Models with a Central Black Hole by Bellinger et. al. describes stellar evolution when a primordial black hole is trapped inside a star. The black hole's accretion creates Hawking radiation, and it grows slowly but exponentially, shortening the star's lifetime and eventually collapsing it into a stellar-mass black hole. I wonder how this affects the luminosities of nearby newer galaxies versus distant older galaxies, and whether changing galactic luminosity has been misinterpreted as anomalous red shift and dark matter expansion. ------ .034 (ref) History of dark matter (2018) G Bertone, D Hooper .057 Ostriker/Mitton Heart of Darkness 2013 . .068 Tucker The Dark Matter 1988 .071 Rubin Observatory LSST Large Synoptic Survey Telescope first light 2023 (book) 2025 wikipedia .074 Rubin telescope visible from road D-595 (6 km northwest, 3.7km MSL), 100 more km on windy roads June 19 from Samo Alto and Pichasca, 30.39°S . travelling for 2019 July 2 eclipse approx 30°S .090 Big Bang Nucleosynthesis Revisited Wagoner 1973 .094 Albert Bosma .094 Westerbork radio observatory map .095 In Search of Dark Matter 2006 Ken Freeman and Geoff !McNamara .104 Mass to Light Ratios of Spiral Galaxies .104 The distribution and kinematics of neutral hydrogen in spiral galaxies of various morphological types A Bosma - 1978 .104 The Cosmic Cocktail Katherine Freese .131 WIMPs not found by LHC energies, p132 at 10 TeV you run out of wiggle room .132 The Cosmic Cocktail Katherine Freese .134 IllustrisTNG cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation .168 PSU Library The Dark Matter Problem: A Historical Perspective, Sanders, Robert H. .223 XENON Dark Matter Experiment Elena Aprile .228 ref 5 The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: power-spectrum analysis of the final data set and cosmological implications ALSO Detection of the Baryon Acoustic Peak in the Large-Scale Correlation Function of SDSS Luminous Red Galaxies .228 ref 5 The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey: power-spectrum analysis of the final data set and cosmological implications ALSO Detection of the Baryon Acoustic Peak in the Large-Scale Correlation Function of SDSS Luminous Red Galaxies .258 AMS-02 Alpha magnetic spectrometer attached to ISS by last (extra) shuttle flight, ~600 events per second, measuring antimatter in cosmic rays, P.I.
