p139 s9.5 Herpesviruses HSV1: 70 genes, 153kbp

  • α immediate early phase       β early       γ late

p141: UL41   VHS = virion host shutoff. A ribonuclease that degrades cytoplasmic mRNA that is being translated. Decreases the half-life of all mRNA in the cell, favoring protein expression from viral genes that are being actively transcribed. Later, a more specific host shutoff function (what function???) is expressed, and UL41 is inactivated by binding to VP16.
