Chronology of Helen's life:
1919 born as the youngest child of Mary Glover Glenn and John LeRoy Glenn (Roy), Gastonia, NC
- Siblings Emma, Mable, Robert, Herbert, Ralph, Ruth
- A baby, John, had died in infancy about a year before Helen was born.
- 1928 Asks barber to cut her hair as short as her father's (age 8)
- 1929 Teaches friends to smoke cigarettes (age 9)
- 1929 Helen's mother died abruptly of a stroke (age 9)
- 1931 Helen and her father move to Fort Mill, SC, with her new, beloved stepmother, Laura
- 1934 Helen's father dies of a stroke (age 15)
- 1935 Graduation from high school
- 1936 UNC Greensboro (Women's College)for secretarial school
- 1937 Works for Culps Store in Gastonia (groceries, gasoline, coal) (Run by Floyd and Oscar Culp)
- 1939 to 41 Montreat College; becomes assistant secretary to the Dean Helen took her first trip away from home when she went to Montreat, and was so relieved to be greeted by Rachel Henderlite, daughter of Dr. Henderlite, her favorite minister at the time, who confirmed her
- 1941 to 43 Queens College, Charlotte, NC
- 1943 Accepts position as secretary for Presbyterian Church in Valdosta, Georgia
- 1945 Meets Charlie, a soldier visiting the USO Club in Valdosta, where Helen bakes cookies for the servicemen. She cancels her engagement to George.
- 1946 Helen's stepmother dies (I'm unsure of date: Laura announced the engagement but was not able to attend the wedding)
- 1946 Marries Charles Frederick Phelps and moves to Sellersville, Pennsylvania
- 1947 Hired for Youth ministry at Reformed Church, Quakerstown, Pennsylvania
- 1948 First child
- 1950 Move to apartment within walking distance of church
- 1952 Second child
- 1952 Move to 150 year-old stone farmhouse in Quakertown, while still in renovation process
- Later called by Helen “Two Views Farm”
- 1954 Third child
- 1956 Fourth child
- 1948-1962: active in Lutheran church in Sellersville (couples club, Sunday School, etc.); with children in Girl Scouts, Brownies and Pixies; school PTA
- 1962 Move to Severna Park, Maryland
- 1963-2008 Active in Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church and West Severna Park Association
- During part of this period she was a supporter of St. Johns college lecture series and an active participant in AAUW-American Association of University Women and numerous bridge clubs
- 1965-1970, approximately: as their Sunday School teacher, she was asked by group of teen boys to explore Western philosophy and the foundations of religion thought;
