"It's not as if the APOE gene is designed for destructive purposes: it's not. The APOE gene is the DNA blueprint for a specific lipoprotein, a protein that is involved in the transport of certain lipids in the blood. It comes in three variants, or alleles: APOE-2, APOE-3, and APOE-4. For reasons that are still not entirely clear, this gene for a protein involved in cholesterol transport also affects risk for acquiring Alzheimer's disease.
